The marigold flowers shake ever so slightly as the light breeze moves past. Then there is stillness for a moment, a tiny movement just perceptible in one or two flowers. These are marigolds grown as a companion for the tomatoes, to keep away the whitefly. The tomatoes have gone now but the marigolds remain, golden stars to grace an early autumn morning. Each flower has a long stem and this allows the gentle rocking in the lightest of breezes. They are something of a rabble, these flowers. When the wind rises they shake about, jostling with each other for a better position, before resting back to where they were, making their tiny movements as if to confirm their new position, which is in fact no different at all. Some of the flowers have closed their petals and made seeds. The petals shrivel and the green sepals turn brown and contain the crazy seeds, uncomfortably long and mostly black, unseen until collected and put away, ready for next spring to be sown with the tomatoes for another year of guard duty.
