Growing Vegetables 11

Ideas and complications

I can’t even work out who said what I am trying to remember. It’s about doing before thinking, a neat phrase that says act twice before thinking once. I’m applying it to this. I’m writing before I think. I’m also listening to music. Being drawn away from this to that. I’m listening to Manu Katche, Third round, in particular Stay with You. There’s a singer and I want to know who she is. I think it’s Kami Lyle. Breathy, beautiful. Searches reveal little or nothing. All this is a diversion from something. The vegetables are growing. The sun is shining.

Action

One thought today was to get out and get doing before writing. The week is going well, but there is lots to do. Lots to do! Lots to do! I have sown some more seeds and I have potted on some little plants. I have also found some hazel bean sticks which I plan to make an arch with to support my miniature kiwi fruit vines. I have cuttings which have rooted, and they would do well on an arch. I’m continuing to spread the soil conditioner on cardboard, and I have gathered ingredients to make my own potting compost.

Plants

The tomato plants are still looking really sad. I’m wondering if it’s the compost. It was a locally sourced peat free one, and it produced lots of mushroomy things that looked a little menacing. But it could just be the cold. I’m not sure what to do, because I used up all the seed, and I carefully chose the varieties. I have ordered new other compost, the best according to internet research, and that arrives tomorrow. The tagetes have come up and been potted on, and I have also potted on the leeks. The tobacco plants and mignonette are showing.

Other things

To accommodate the new little plants, I have moved the kale and cabbages out of the greenhouse and covered them with fleece. I haven’t used fleece before, but I like it already. It seems to be a super product, apart from the fact that my little dog thinks she can walk on it. It protects the plants from the cold, but also keeps away the pigeons. Some of the curly kale plants have got actual curly bits on them, which makes me ever so excited. Also I mixed up a some old seed and broadcast it around on the allotment.
